Development Programme of Far East Connections Postponed until 2010
16.05.2008

The Management Board of Polish Airlines LOT informs that the development programme of Far East connections will be continued after procurement of Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes, which is scheduled for 2010. As of June 6, LOT suspends flights along the Warsaw – Beijing route.

The key aspect for the success of LOT flights to Far East destinations was the exchange programme of long-distance fleet. However, due to delays in the B787 programme on the part of Boeing, delivery of the first planes ordered in 2005 was postponed from 2008 to 2010. Therefore, LOT was forced to make a decision about postponing the development programme of Far East flights until 2010.

The decision on continuing flights to such a distant destination is based on economic calculation. In the present situation, the profitability of the connection to Beijing could only be ensured by 787 Boeing. LOT, just like any other company operating on a competitive market, cannot sustain losses on account of activities it pursues.

The profitability of the Far East - Warsaw connection is also adversely affected by the necessity of following the southern route and high fuel prices.

In April, Boeing informed about yet another postponement of the first flight of Boeing 787 Dreamliner from the end of the second quarter of 2008 to the end of the fourth quarter of 2008. This entails that the programme of plane delivery to LOT will be delayed by several months. LOT, expecting delays in deliveries, has previously extended lease agreements with respect to long-distance planes Boeing 767-300 that are being currently used.

LOT will contact all passengers who purchased tickets in order to explain the existing situation. Additional information about the cancelled flights to Beijing is available at the following phone number: +48 22 6069790.

In total, LOT ordered eight Boeing 787 planes with delivery deadline of four planes by the end of 2008; then one plane in 2009 and subsequent three in 2010 with a purchase option for eight planes in the following years. Currently, the plans foresee delivery of five new planes in 2010.
